HP Latex 730 W Printer | How to Print 3-Layer Day & Night Graphics on Metamark Backlit Film

Mar 9, 2026 | SU TV

In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to use the HP Latex 730 W Printer to create 3-layer Day and Night backlit graphics on Metamark MD-BL2 Backlit Film.

This technique allows you to print two versions of the same image – one for natural daylight and one that reveals vibrant, high-contrast colours when illuminated from behind.

We’ll show every step of the process:

  • Loading and preparing the HP Latex 730 W Printer
  • Swapping the White Printheads
  • Setting up your artwork in Adobe Illustrator
  • Creating a 3-page PDF with a SPOT1 White middle layer
  • Configuring ONYX RIP software for 3-Layer Mode (CMYK + White + CMYK)
  • Printing and trimming with a Keencut Trimmer
  • And finally, mounting the finished print in an A0 Lightbox

🧠 Step-by-Step: Setting Up Day & Night Printing in ONYX

  • Open ONYX Thrive or RIP Center and import your multipage PDF.
  • Confirm it’s a 3-page file (CMYK front, White middle, CMYK back).
  • In the Job Properties, select the correct media preset (in this case, Generic Polyester) and choose the 3-layer print mode
  • Check the box stating ‘Print using multiple layers’.
  • Open Printer Settings.
  • Under Color White Color, check the boxes to use separate images for Side A and Side B as well as ‘Use Spot Layer(s)’
  • Send to print and monitor progress.
